Captains Of Industry

is a loosely connected organisation of like-minded writers, musicians, artists, poets, publishers, record labels, producers, fanzines and other deviants of the artistic / altruistic process. Through a simple shared philosophy the collective aims to share resources and provide cross-cultural reference points in order to aid creative output and spread a message of opposition to those who misuse their positions of power - be they artistic, economic or political.

"Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words."
– St Francis Of Assisi

Who, what,  when…and why?
The Sound Explosion are one of the most exciting bands in Britain right now. The past twelve months have seen them play 100+ shows over the course of seven tours, both headlining  and as support to various bands including The Mooney Suzuki, The Glitterai, Do Me Bad Things, The 5678’s, The (International) Noise Conspiracy.

Is it bad form to say that The Sound Explosion blew away every man jack of ‘em? We cannot lie. It certainly felt revolutionary, four teenagers rolling into town and stealing the thunder of those bands living on their major label budgets and being hailed as the next big thing. Living by their wits. Sleeping on floors. Building a small army. Inspiring fan sites and the required stalkers. Doing it the hard way. Doing it the right way. The only way…

The Sound Explosion are Kit Endean –(guitar & vocals), Glen Roughead (guitar & vocals), Euan MacFarlane (bass guitar) and Stevey Gibson (drums). They formed in Newcastle-upon-Tyne 2002 when the members were all sixteen years old. They are lead by the windmilling duel assault of Kit Endean (vocals/guitar) and Glen Roughead (vocals/guitar), the ying and tang of the band in an Page/Plant, Strummer/Jones tradition. They are joined by Euan MacFarlane (bass) and Stevey Gibson (drums).

“Because the truth must be amplified”
Inspired by music ranging from Stax to Shellac, Sun Records to The Sonics, Led Zeppelin to Hot Snakes, their music is a twenty-first century amalgamation of the fast and furious sound of punk rock and soul, with a side order of dirty blues and gospel call-and-response fervour not normally seen in skinny white boys.

“You don't need 230 synths to make it sound good” Glen told writer John Robb “It's boys and their toys - once you pick up a guitar and play three chords you're hooked. You play your favourite song, it's like a drug. Once you got it you're just hooked. I always carry plectrums around just waiting to improvise and do something."

The early days of The Sound Explosion  were a blur of fifteen minute sets that ended in injury and/or threats of violence.  They played with bands such like The Dirtbombs and The Hives and decided to ditch potential careers in professional football and astro physics to make a right old musical stink

By early 2004 they had become the most loved/hated young band in Newcastle and signed to Captains Of Industry, who released two highly limited single ‘Time After Time’ (September 2004) and ‘Street Freak (March 2005), which was voted in Plylouder’s Singles of 2004.

“Rock ‘n’ roll is ridiculous.” - anonymous
Recorded over two frantic weekends in 2004, The Sound Explosion’s self-titled album was released April 2005, and received acclaim everywhere from Kerrang!and Rock Sound to Music Week, Heat, The Guardian and Metal Hammer. Radio 1 and XFM played tunes and NME called it “a forced fart of a record” and gave it 3/10. If it was a fart, at least it was a loud one that lingered….

Summer 2005 and one hundred gigs later and the band entered the studio with producer for album number two. Entirely self-funded and with nothing in the way of a road crew, The Sound Explosion are defying the odds and not only surviving but flourishing as a 100% independent rock ‘n’ roll band.

Having already hit all the small towns of Britain two or three times over this is a cult thing happening at street level.  Their website forum is ablaze with nutters arguing about poetry, drugs, films, sex – but mainly the band.
